SUMMARY:'It's My Time' workload campaign launch (UCU Eastern & Home Counties)
DESCRIPTION:Watch back: \n\n\n\nThe impact of Covid-19 on working practices and the shift to blended learning has meant additional workload pressures for UCU members. The need for an organised collective response in workplaces has never been greater. Coupled with this\, the need for individual members to protect their own wellbeing\, supported by their union and workplace agreements\, is increasingly important. The Eastern region is launching the ‘It’s My Time’ campaign at a virtual members’ meeting on Weds 16 Sept at 1pm. General secretary Jo Grady and Jane Thompson from the national bargaining team will join the regional office to talk about how members can challenge excessive workloads.

SUMMARY:UCU TUC fringe: don't let education be a victim of Covid-19
DESCRIPTION:UCU has urged universities to teach online until ‘regular universal testing’ can be introduced on campuses. UCU general secretary Jo Grady has made clear that without online teaching as the default position we risk universities becoming the care homes of the second wave. This risk adds to the chaos from the student exam fiasco\, as well as the increasing job cuts and increases to workload and casualisation. \nJoin us to hear how we intend to use our fund the future campaign to bring all these concerns together to ensure education is not a victim of Covid-19.

SUMMARY:London and South East FE regional briefing
DESCRIPTION:Fund the future in further education: defend jobs\, reopen colleges safely and protect education for all \nA UCU briefing for branch officers and reps with Matt Waddup – national head of policy and campaigns\, Janet Farrar – president-elect (FE)\, Adam Lincoln and Michael Moran – regional officials. \nThe Covid-19 pandemic is already having a significant impact upon the FE sector\, and has had a disproportionate impact on our BAME communities\, older\, disabled and vulnerable people. Women are the majority of those providing care\, whether paid or unpaid. They are more likely to be employed on insecure and zero-hours contracts\, particularly BME and migrant women\, and to be working part-time. Disabled people already face significant barriers in getting and keeping jobs. \nMeanwhile the FE employers are rushing to return to face to face teaching and introducing blended learning models which may have long-term implications for safety\, jobs\, working conditions and workloads.   \nIt is vital that all UCU branches are able to organise and mobilise effectively to defend jobs and ensure that the reopening of colleges is safe. \nThis regional briefing will: \n\nupdate you on the funding environment\, political context and the potential financial impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on FE institutions\ndiscuss the national UCU fund the future campaign\, available resources and support for branches\nreview the exam results fiasco and the impact on workloads \nprovide you with practical guidance and advice on defending jobs and ensuring that the reopening of FE colleges is safe for staff and students\nexplore the challenges faced by UCU members over blended learning delivery models.\n\nThe webinar panel will discuss how to use workplace campaigns to defend jobs and working conditions. There will be a Q&A session where we can discuss how to link up with local campaigns and issues in your workplace.

SUMMARY:Is it safe to reopen universities and colleges?
DESCRIPTION:Join Jo Grady\, UCU general secretary; Larissa Kennedy\, NUS president; Janet Farrar UCU president-elect; and Professor Elizabeth Stokoe and Professor Ann Phoenix\, from the Independent Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies. \nAs the new academic year approaches there is an increasing focus on how campuses and colleges within the UK will manage the start of teaching. In the next few weeks a mass movement of over a million students\, many of them first year undergraduates\, will begin. Many thousands will be relocating from one part of the UK and beyond to their place of study and FE campuses need to look at how they reopen safely. It is now timely that UCU sets out our position – join us to discuss UCU’s latest guidance and the Independent Sage report.

SUMMARY:Fighting job cuts & structural racism
DESCRIPTION:As lockdown restrictions begin to ease\, the economic impact of Covid-19 is now being felt across HE\, FE and adult and prison education with a significant number of institutions seeking to make posts redundant or otherwise cut staff costs. These moves will have an even greater impact on black members\, who are disproportionately employed on precarious contracts and as such bear the brunt of job cuts and attacks on pay and conditions. \nJoin us for an informative session\, with input from black members across FE\, HE and prison education\, to discuss how cuts are affecting black workers\, students and communities\, the intersectional implications and how we can fight against their damaging impact. \nPlease register here

SUMMARY:Prison education: a vision for the future
DESCRIPTION:Prisons are one of the toughest environments to work in never mind a place within which to deliver good and meaningful education. The process of commissioning education for profit in prisons has created a fragmented workforce\, who face many challenges including their own terms and conditions. In addition\, the commissioning model has arguably diverted resources away from the development\, design and delivery of truly meaningful education. \nThis webinar as part of Fund the Future campaign will explore how we develop an overarching strategy to remedy the previous pattern of disjointed and confused decision-making that has shaped the prison education sector in the past. We will also aim to discuss how we transform the pay\, working conditions and professional standing of our prison education members into the future. \nThis will include how we learn from other trade union campaigns to ‘nationalise’ services; how we can bargain for a prison educators’ ‘national contract’; how we cope with the challenges ahead in relation to social distancing and blended learning and the availability or otherwise of in-cell technology; and how we can amplify our voices as professional educators around the development of a truly fit for purpose innovative prison education curriculum that sees the education provision being designed and delivered around educational needs as opposed to contractual restrictions. \nWatch back:

SUMMARY:Empower and educate
DESCRIPTION:We all agree there can be no return to normal post Covid-19\, but what kind of changes need to take place? What tools does education give us to build a better future? \nJoin us for this exciting online event where we explore what education is for; start to transform our knowledge and communities and build a society that works for everyone. \nWith Jo Grady\, UCU general secretary and Dave Ward\, CWU general secretary. \nSpecial guests: Billy Bragg\, Sonia Adesara\, Grace Blakeley\, Dalia Gebrial\, Charmaine Brown\, Ann Pettifor\, Faiza Shaheen\, and Gary Younge \nWatch back: \n\n\n\nYou can also watch on Facebook \n\nRunning order:\n6.00-6.10: \nIntroduction by Jo Grady\, UCU general secretary \n6.10-7.00: \nBuilding for better: Covid-19\, BLM\, and the climate crisis  \nChair\, Vicky Blake\, UCU president \nGrace Blakeley\, Ann Pettifor\, Dalia Gebrial\, and Charmaine Brown: \nWe all agree there can be no more return to normal\, but what kind of changes need to take place? Not just to educate and re-skill our students and communities\, but to also build a better post-covid world for ourselves. What tools does education give us to build a better future? Education is not just something that happens in the classroom\, but the ideas we learn there can help. In this session we want to explore the role of activism informed by feminism\, economics\, urban geography\, and decolonisation have to transform our knowledge and transform our communities and society and build for a better future. \n7.00-7.30: \nA new deal for workers  \nDave Ward (CWU) and Jo Grady (UCU) \n7.30-8.00: \nJail Guitar Doors Music featuring Billy Bragg \nChair: Janet Farrer\, UCU president-elect \nBilly Bragg and Justin Boreland will discuss the importance of music in prisons and UCU’s joint initiative with Billy\, Jail Guitar Doors Music \n8.00-8.50: \nEmpower and Educate: delivering social justice \nChair: Jo Grady \nFaiza Shaheen\, Sonia Adesara and Gary Younge \nEducation develops people’s capacities\, challenges them\, communicates values\, and creates lifelong opportunities. It is a source of dignity and community. But the system we work and study within is eroding those ideals. Much like healthcare\, education is being turned into a dysfunctional consumer market\, and the people who provide it into a cost to be minimised. But students are not units of production for the workplace.  And education is not a product. In this session we will explore what is education for? Is the current system maximising social or even economic progress\, Who is the current system actually working for\, and what type of post 16 education system delivers social justice while educating the public to flourish\, and creating a working environment that is healthy for staff. \n8.50-9.00: Summary and close with Jo Grady.
